The renovation of the West Vancouver Memorial Library tackled complex design challenges to create a unified and graceful vision. The project unified renewed an outdated, cluttered space into a cohesive, elegant design with simple, thoughtful solutions.
This 8,000 square-foot renovation of the West Wing supports the library’s evolving programs and diverse patrons, bringing the spaces a revitalized look, feel, and functionality. The spatial layout and collections were reorganized through a space planning exercise with staff to accommodate new program areas and lounge spaces.
The renovation enhances accessibility throughout the collection area, washrooms, lounges, and offices. With sustainability in mind, new materials and equipment were selected, and efforts were made to repurpose existing resources. Library patrons tested sample lounge chairs before the final selection. Fabrics and seating were chosen to appeal to different user groups and distinguish one lounge area from another.
The design also addresses the challenge of working with an existing low ceiling and an array of exposed sprinkler lines, electrical conduits, and light fixtures. A new ceiling creates clean, flowing lines that draw the eye across the space and conceal tightly coordinated services.
Lounge areas are enhanced with natural light and scenic views, creating a sense of spaciousness. A new focal point is a 60-foot-long wall with an abstract image of local tree trunks printed on wood veneer panels under a row of skylights. The natural light animates the tree patterns, changing throughout the day and seasons. The design also incorporates a colour palette inspired by West Vancouver artist BC Binning, adding a sense of place.
